COLLABORATIVE DESIGN AT ITS BEST.

This project was a perfect example of a collaborative design relationship. Working with a client so incredibly enthusiastic about design helped the efforts of the entire design team - client, designer, architect and builder - truly shine.  

The starting point of this project was a well-conceived and light-filled shell, primed for our task of balancing the vertically open spaces with intimate moments. The kitchen is the gathering place for the entire family, and the natural focus of the main living space. An oversized island is the workhorse of the kitchen, anchoring the room and offering an easy place to hang out during parties and a perfect spot for homework or casual meals. A wall of terracotta tile - the showstopping backdrop to the entire room - highlights the important role the kitchen plays for the family.

Every surface and material was carefully considered in the house, with a preference for craftsmanship. The cold-rolled steel vent hood and fireplace balance the handmade terracotta tile, and rough-hewn beams provide an overhead rhythm echoed at a smaller scale in the shiplap on the walls of the office nook.

Smaller spaces to slip away were developed throughout the house to balance the open volumes of the main spaces, allowing spots to curl up with a good book, or work on Legos.
