The kitchen was an empty space when this project began. The design concept became clear as we determined exactly what our clients wanted from their new kitchen. The clients wanted a kitchen that functioned well for parties and family get-togethers, which also felt intimate for nights alone.

The solution was to divide the kitchen into three zones by placing an island in the center of the space. In the first zone, a large counter surface gives the clients enough space on which to work together. The table and banquette give guests a place to sit close by, so the cooks can still be part of the conversation. In the third zone, a bar area with a wine refrigerator doubles as a buffet on the dining room side. On weekday nights, the kitchen still serves as the heart of the house allowing the couple to cook or work at the dining table, easily sharing the space. The view and the trees surrounding the house were the true stars of the show, so it was important to keep the palette very clean and simple. A grey glass tile backsplash adds textural interest, while creating a nice contrast to the silver travertine countertops.
